Surfing Coyote Cal's

River Mouth | Barny's Cove | Half Moon Bay
Sunset Beach | Lighthouse | Quatros Casas

Awww dude, check out the line up. Dude there's got to be fifty people out there!  Sound familiar? Shaved headsWell not only do we have some kick ass surfing in Baja, but line ups are just not in the cards surfing at Coyote Cal's. Whether you're a grom or a seasoned veteran, a long boarder or a wave carver, a surfer or a boogie-boarder, this spot has the waves for you. With three great surf breaks in the immediate area, the options are limitless.

Local Surf Spots

River Mouth (Boca de Rio)
Just south of us, River Mouth can be accessed from a road in town. One mile long, the beach usually deserted, will offer lefts and rights on a beach break with waves which can, under the right conditions, reach ten to twelve feet. Extreme conditions, with the largest waves, are usually in the Winter months. Wet suit, hood and boots are recommended during Winter. It may also be a good idea to slide your melon into some neoprene, unless you're a fan of ice cream headaches. During the summer months a spring suit or boardies should be sufficient.

Barny's Cove
Great for rookies. Located within

walking distance of the hostel, this small deserted beach offers ideal conditions for catching your first ride. Has been known to go off but is a relatively mellow beach break.

Barny's CoveExcellent for long boarding and getting your feet wet. Features a sandy bottom and a short paddle to the break. At times there's a gnarly current that can tow you to the right, so it's a good idea to stay central or slightly to the left. The rocks are covered with mussels and don't offer the best of exits. Great beach for surfing, boogie-boarding or just lazing in the sun.

Half Moon Bay
Picture perfect. Featuring a sandy bottom beach break. Under the right conditions Half Moon Bay can be dreamland. A great spot to spend the day. Pack some "Cervesas" or pop, hot dogs or burgers, some charcoal and a grill, (we'll provide that) and make a day of it.

Located about 3 1/2 kilometers from Coyote Cal's just North of Punta Cabra, Half Moon Bay and Sunset Beach can be accessed by same the road which winds along the coast to Punta Cabra and eventually Santo Thomas. You'll recognize it as you round the final corner and see the homes on both sides of the hill. Follow the road to the top of the hill and take the left fork, then stay to your right. Park directly in front of the bay (Unless you enjoy digging your vehicle out). Surrounded by dunes of the finest silky sand this is an ideal spot not only because of its seclusion and beauty, but because you will have access to another great beach.

If you continue along the road, rather than taking the left fork you will end up at a great camping area directly on the beach, amidst some bitchin' dunes. You'll see a lot of people camped here because it's a popular spot for surfers from California. Did someone say lineups? Not here dude.

Sunset Beach (Long Beach)
Located a few steps from Half Moon Bay this is probably the best and most radical of the local surf spots. To the immediate left you'll notice a channel. There is a strip of sandy beach. This is where you'll enter. The channel will take you right out to the break.

Not much paddling necessary here. You can continuously loop this spot and surf your way to nirvana. Although the entire area can go off under the right conditions, this is a great spot!

The nice thing about Half Moon Bay is that you access to 2 great options within steps of each other. Because Half Moon Bay faces South West and Sunset Beach North West, conditions will vary radically between the two.

All of the above beaches are of course ideal for Boogie Boarding, Long Boarding and just plain having fun in the sun! There is no record of surfer, swimmer-shark altercations in any of the above beaches.

Lighthouse
Fifteen to twenty miles along the coastal road past Sunset Beach. The road will T-bone. Turn left and continue to the Lighthouse. The road's gnarly so take your time. Features left and right reef breaks. Excellent on a south swell, ten to twelve feet during ideal conditions. A very popular spot with the California surf crowd, and no line-ups.
top

Quatros Casas, Shipwrecks, Freighters
This is a renowned, killer, surf spot mentioned in all the Baja surf guides. (Quatros Casas, AKA. Shipwrecks AKA. Freighters.) I am told that this break is not for beginners. Sick lefts and rights on a reef break. We will call and monitor surf conditions before we arrange your trip to insure good conditions. Directions will be provided for those driving themselves.
